Active online community

Our big boss seems to have this on his mind, he's mentioned it a few times... and I think it'd really be quite beneficial for staff engagement! So... some ideas our team is trying to explore, to create a more active online community that updates each other on non-work matters too.

  1. Area on intranet for Social Info - Creating an area in our intranet to highlight non-work related info to staff. Our intranet has lots of work-related info, only 1 part about Communities of Interest... it's time to expand that, include things like our renovated gym, staff lounge with coffee machine (the mocha there is yummy!), karaoke equipment, free talks on coping with stress etc etc... I'm not sure how many staff actually know we have such things in our building?

  2. Better use of "Free-to-Air" - There is an obscure corner at the bottom right hand corner of our intranet which has potential, akin FB status updates. It's easy for staff to post something, each entry appears as 1 line on our main intranet page, click to see more info, pics if there are. Staff can write whatever they wish to let the rest of college know, a 1-liner, or loads of additional info, up to them! And it is easily done (if I can, anyone can!). My current status update would be: Kopi-O-Siu-Dai can say she is exploring Facebook for work *grin*

  3. Reviving this Blog - This blog could be circulated to all staff and publicised much more. Since we have gotten 'ok' from the big boss to make use of internet, we should take the opportunity to do so! :-)

Any other ideas or suggestions from the experts out there??

I have two suggestions:

1) Online discussion forum
2) Instant messenger

No.2 is out of my control :(

No.1 is POSSIBLE, def open to trying one out. But many discussion forums are not sustainable...

ps. am trying to see if our Free-to-Air corner cd work like FB status updates. what do you think??

I understand your reservations about the forum, judging by the fact that at least 90% of people do not even have any updates or comments in their own SYP profiles. We did have a garage sale thread when I first joined but that seems to have disappeared.

I do know that some public service agencies activate the IM in Lotus Notes for staff to send broadcasts and quick messages to each other. I don't see why we can't have that with big boss's backing. Can also ensure that the SOEasy migration would include that feature if we can justify hard enough for it.

I saw your blog post in Free-to-Air but I don't see your comment about using FB for work. I also don't think it's of an interactive like facebook if it is just a list of posts by people. Have you tried exploring the KenShine profiles?

the problem is- we don't have enough vocal pple to do this. it's not abt being net savvy or anything. it's abt putting your comments out in the open. if there's a forum, let's just say i won't be on it. i'd consider using a pseudonym. but i won't, because i'll be tracked. yes, i am a cynic.

i think people are also afraid that if they are active on these platforms, then others may think they're too free and do not have enough work to do. i mean, my Director, just came over to ask if i very free- and that's why i keep posting up blog entries. he was kidding of course! lol. but seriously, i think that there are those who are afraid that they'd be told the same thing. *hee*
