What Do You See

As much as I used to cringe at all those old (circa 1990 - 1994) National Day songs, I'm kinda nostalgic about them now. Think "Stand Up for Singapore", "We Are Singapore", "Count On Me Singapore", "Singapore Town", "One People One Nation One Singapore", etc.

Never mind that some are written by a Canadian, commissioned works notwithstanding. Those songs seem so much more meaningful, catchy and easier to sing than these from the recent years. Perhaps I'm trying to put across the point that they sound alot more patriotic.

The National Day 2009 English theme song is simply mind boggling. It isn't quite folk, rock or 新谣 (xin yao). It's like our national identity- rojak. The song has no firm identity of what it wants to be. It seems to be a mish-mash of everything, wanting to be all that anyone dreams whatever out of it.

I've no idea what to make of it.

The old Clement Chow ones were so catchy that one remembers the lyrics even 10-20 years down the road. Heck, they're still being sung today.

This one and the last few just didn't have the hook. Uh... who sang last year's NDP song? Beats me!
