Are We Like Them?

Read this some time ago on the Harvard Business Publishing site:

Bill Taylor's article on Pixar's Blockbuster Secrets. (Which has also been picked up by Business Week.)

Some interesting points from the article:

  • Pixar works distinctively as a company. It doesn't make films that perform better than standard fare, it makes them differently.
  • They have a tight-knit company, people who stick together, learn from one another, strive to improve with each production.
  • They believe in keeping staff happy and fulfilled, having incredible workspace, opportunities to learn and grow etc, things that build long-term affiliation.
  • Pixar University is used as a key platform to help employees develop, learn to see company's work and colleagues differently.
  • Dean of Pixar Uni believes in giving people opportunties to fail together and to recover from mistakes together.
